Blackstone Boundary

Route Description

1.Start to 1stMotorwayBridge crossing (1.5ml from start)

The race will start along the Dam wall running towards the woods in a NW direction. Climb through the wall over the stile and turn right along the track by the wood, through a stile, continue for 100m bear right over a small bridge and head up the steps through the old quarry workings and onto a major track at (GR952-129). Continue along this main path to the inter section of paths at (GR952-133) go straight ahead following the sign post for HollingworthLake. After 50m keep right keeping to main path heading down into Longden End Brook. At bottom of major track, continue straight ahead on a path that leads you over stone bridge (GR956-134). The path is a little undefined here, the route takes you in a NW direction diagonally up the field over an iron bar stile. Continue on path towards motorway, turn right through wall opening and follow path W running parallel to Motorway. Through a gate and the MotorwayBridge is in view, climb slightly and turn right onto bridge at (GR953-142).

2. MotorwayBridge to Blackstone Edge Trig (5ml from start)

Cross over bridge and turn right (towards Yorkshire) through the yard of the house and through gate/stile follow path to further gate and turn left when through. Along good path heading N for 100m, as main path bears left and heads down hill, peel off right on lesser path under electric cables. The path follows the line of the pylons before a rising contour to a large cairn at (GR955-150). The path swings E climbing Clegg Moor. The path leads onto the ridge with Blackstone Edge now ahead of you (if it’s clear!) The path tops the hill and drops slightly before a short climb to the end of the Broad Head Drain. On reaching the drain, follow the course for 1mile to the stile at the Roman Rd. (GR969-170). Turn right up the Roman Rd turning right off the road at the Pennine Way stile at (GR952-170). Follow the good path S climbing to the Trig on Blackstone Edge. (GR972-164)

3. Blackstone Edge to PW / A640 Road Junction (8.5ml from start)

Follow good PW path south over ridge and SE down towards Motorway Bridge at (GR984-148) cross bridge and climb towards mast at Windy Hill cross through Car Park at junction with A672 (GR982142) and keep on PW towards White Hill. The path dog-legs after 1/2m and heads for a further 1/2m to White Hill Trig at (GR990-132). Continue SE on PW to junction with A640 at (GR002-123)

4. A640 Road Junction to finish at Ogden Dam Wall. (13ml from start)

Turn right down road, keeping to Right hand side, PLEASE BE CAREFUL. After 200m, turn right at (GR998-122) through stile onto the good path that leads over Denshaw Moor to Readycon Dean Res. Follow the track along South side of Res, turning right over dam wall and the left on the climbing track (Pennine Bridleway) to the A672 (GR978-122). At Road turn left towards Denshaw after 100m turn right and cross the Road at the back of Rams Head Pub (GR 977-120). Follow track between pub and barns for 50m, then turn Left towards the farm at (GR976121) The path route goes diagonally East across the field (was full of llamas) to a stile in the far end of the field. Over the stile and drop down onto and left onto the drain that leads to Rooden Res, across the dam wall and through the stile at the end. Follow climbing path left and turn left after 100m at path junction to take you round the North side of Rooden Res. This boggy path leads you through a stile and through a farm (watch out for barking dog) From farm the path climbs after 100m bear right on track towards the Kennels, behind the old Moorcock Hotel. Follow the path along and then quite steeply down for 1/2m through the small hamlet (GR 958-119) and on the tarmac road leading down towards Ogden. Continue on road until bend in road at (GR955-121) and turn right off the road and onto track. The track continues as grass path and over two stiles through field to the Road junction at Ogden Res. (GR953-122) Turn left and 50m to finish at the steps leading to the Dam wall.
