Route Description

The Saddleworth Fell Race is a 3-mile, Category “A Short”, fell race. The race HQ is at The Tanner Business Centre, Waterside Mill.

The race starts on Tunstead Lane, a short walk from HQ. The route climbs 950 feet up to Alderman’s Hill and circles anti clockwise Dick Hill to Pots and Pans/Monument before dropping steeply back into the valley.

The route change came about when considering the increasing danger of the road crossing at the start/finish. Just starting the race above Holmfirth Road would have shortened the overall distance too much. So the new route is extended in the middle section. In the hope that the character of the classic route be retained. So the lung busting ascent and eye watering descent remain. With a great flat non technical middle section with fantastic views added.

You will start on Tunstead Lane heading along the road to Dick Clough. The old route is joined here and followed to Alderman’s. It’s steep. From Alderman’s the route follows the edge overlooking Dovestone’s Res. Then crosses Dick Hill to the opposite edge overlooking Uppermill and Greenfield heading to Pots and Pans/Monument. That’s the new bit. The running is fast unless you pushed too hard on the climb. From Pots and Pans it’s a steep descent back into Dick Clough where the finish line awaits.

Registration takes place in the loading bay immediately adjacent to the start and finish. Parking at the mill is limited so competitors are asked to arrive early in order to obtain on road parking and to be able to register on time. Marshals will be at the entrance to the mill yard to assist in the parking arrangements.
