an alternative

Definitely “NOT” a better alternative to any of Colin’s “Thursday Club” sessions……….but an alternative when nothing else is available.

For anyone working in Manchester and interested in an all year round track/speed session, one is held at the Manchester City Stadium on Thursday evening starting at 6.45 pm.

You meet in the foyer and watch for a gathering of people. Its £2.40 to get in to the arena and £1.00 to the coach. The club conducting the session is Belle Vue Racers but anyone can join in. You do warm up laps, then warm up exercises and then repetitions of different distances at 85% effort 100% effort etc. Everyone is really friendly and it’s for all abilities.

It may not suit those with delicate egos in respect of their speed as the track is shared with various other groups of “more able” athletes and when a human rocket overtakes you built like Linford Christie I imagine some may feel a little deflated. Alternatively, if you’ve come to terms with your incompetence and you enjoy seeing talent in others then its fascinating witnessing that level of power pass by.

The extra plus is that there is a great sense of “venue” about the place with lots of young athletic people doing hurdles, high jump and various track and relay training, creating a great atmosphere and spectacle and sound. The session lasts about 75 mins with the warming up and down.

I recommend it if you have had time out through injury/illness and you are dreading that first run. It throws you back in at the deep end and gets it over with. Or even to remind you (or in my case experience for the first time) what a speed session on track consists of so that you can apply it yourself on the Greenfield track. Or maybe you are one of those who prefers to pay for prescribed measured torture inflicted in an urban environment in hot, scorching relentless heat with no shade or let up as opposed to running for free across dramatic peak district landscape with a cool breeze …etc etc.

Anyway – its really good for anyone who fancies having a go at something different and Colin's not around to arrange anything on a Thursday.
