Polar Explorer To Give Talk In Delph
Saddleworth’s WI has invited explorer and author Felicity Aston to Delph.
She’ll be talking about her trip, as well as signing books and discussing other projects which she has been involved in. Two years ago she led a team of eight women to the South Pole, the largest such group ever to make the journey, she’s also visited the icy wildernesses of Greenland and Siberia.'
Felicity will be appearing at Millgate Arts Centre on 16 February at 7:30pm Tickets cost £4 for Saddleworth WI members and £5 for guests. This includes a pie and peas supper.

Captain Scott
As a kid growing up in Failsworth, I and fellow friends used to plague the Methodist church on Oldham Road (now knocked down) and think we were clever when at a certain time of year, if we went to Sunday school for so many weeks prior to a particular date (no idea what the date was!) we used to "qualify" for a gift.
We thought we were being clever, but it was the vicar who was clever because he used to wrap the gifts up - making them more enticing. I remember well that one year my gift was a ladybird book on Captain Scott. 40 years on, I really respect that vicar, and I'm sure he doesn't mind that I don't remember who he was as an individual - just that the gesture will always be remembered. He knew that a gang of us who played on the street and never went to church, would come along for at least 4 weeks of the year, just to qualify for a gift. And he was right, we did. It doesn't make me closer to the church, or know more about captain scott, but its just a hand reaching out to try and communicate that matters and a lesson that I carry on throughout life.
One hundred year anniversary of Captain Scott's Polar Expedition
One hundred years ago, on 17 January 1912, Captain Robert Falcon Scott and four other intrepid explorers arrived at the South Pole. They had hoped to make history and be the first people ever to reach their destination, but discovered they had been beaten by a Norwegian team led by Roald Amundsen.
Follow the link below to see some fantastic images of Scott's heroic but ultimately fatal quest.

I believe in March there will be various events up and down the country to mark the heroic but fatal Scott Polar Expedition.
