Route Description
This is and anti-clockwise route as last year and will be partially marked. Marshals will be on route, with a ‘sweep team’ for stragglers.
Starting from the side of the Diggle Hotel, the route takes you up ‘Boat Lane’ for 1 mile to car park at Standedge Cutting (GR 018-095) on the main A62 road over to Marsden. The route follows the lane, levels out before descending slightly before turning right on the Pennine Way (PW) at (GR 021-096). The stone paving leads to Black Moss Reservoir (GR032-088), skirting the northern edge, then SE along the Dam Wall. The paved path continues into the
Wessenden Valley, crossing a weir before the Inspection Chamber at (089-042). From here we are reverting back to the original route, hugging the edge path around to Wessenden Res. Cross over the dam wall onto the main Wessenden track.
Follow this track for 1 ¼ miles, steadily descending until you hit the top of the Water Board Steps at (GR 048-108) Follow the slippery steps down, then left at the bottom, before the climb of the reciprocal steps on the Western side of the valley. On hitting the top, the route takes you up around the edge of Marsden Cricket ground and along the southern side their Golf Club. Please keep the flags at all times, as itleads you alongside the boundary of the course, over a stile up to Mount Rd at (GR 037-101).
The path now leads you back onto Boat Lane and after 1mile you rejoin the outward route at the point you left on the PW to Black Moss Res. From here, retrace your steps, over Standedge Cutting and the fast finishing run down Boat Lane to the finish next to the Diggle Hotel.
