Club Championship 2018

RULES = The rules are simple. FIVE races to qualify, to include at least ONE of each distance. You can run more of course.

25th February 2018 - Clwydian Sheep (L)

Start: 10.00am
Venue: Viewpoint carpark above Cilcain
Distance: 28km / 17.4m  Climb: 1400m / 4593ft
Entry: PRE-ENTRY ONLY £8

18th March 2018 - Wolf’s Pit (S)

ALSO A GRAND PRIX QUALIFIER
Start: 11.00am
Venue: Shatton, nr Bamford, Hope Valley
Distance: 9km / 5.6m  Climb: 450m / 1476ft
Entry: £7 EOD

This race packs a punchy 600 ft climb almost from the off. The climb on well cropped runnable(ish) grass takes you onto some single track and open moorland running, a final sting in the tail leads you back to the head of the original climb, where you can extend your legs for a final race down to the finish field. The Wolf’s Pit gets its name from a feature high on the Shatton / Abney Moors by which the race route passes.

24th March 2018 - Coniston 14 (L)

Venue: Coniston
Distance: 14m
Entry: PRE-ENTRY ONLY

7th April 2018 - Wardle Skyline (M)

ALSO A GRAND PRIX QUALIFIER
Venue: Wardle Square, off A58 Rochdale/Littleborough Road
Start: 14.00pm
Distance: 11.3km / 7m  Climb: 381m / 1250ft
Entry: £5 EOD

The circular course is quite tough but mostly runnable for the fitter folk.   It takes in Brown Wardle, Middle Hill and has an interesting sting in the tail after a cobbled section that seems to be the end, it’s only a short ascent but with tired legs and a strong opposing wind it’s not easy. Ideal for someone looking for a more challenging but not outrageously difficult fell race.

7th May 2018 - Coiners Fell (M)

ALSO A GRAND PRIX QUALIFIER
Venue: Mytholmroyd Community and Leisure Centre, HX7 5AF
Start: 13.00pm
Distance: 10.8km / 6.7m  Climb: 295m / 968ft
Entry: £5 EOD

A fast and well-marked tour of Coiner’s country on paths, tracks & moorland, taking in Erringden Moor, Stoodley Pike & Bell House Moor. The route offers spectacular views of Cragg Vale & passes by the old coiners cottages of Bell House & Keelam. To help prevent moorland fires, smoking is not permitted on the race route, so no sneaky fags partway round the course.

3rd June 2018 - Edenfield Fell (M)

ALSO A GRAND PRIX QUALIFIER
Venue: Edenfield Cricket Club, Gincroft Lane, BL0 0JW
Start: 10.30am
Distance: 10.3km / 6.4m  Climb: 477m / 1565ft
Entry: £4 EOD

The long climb up to Cowpe Lowe is relentless, then it’s down to the Pennine Bridleway (near the final leg of the Mary Towneley loop) and up again past Waugh's well. After the Well carry on up, then right and up yet again to Whittle Pike cross. From there it's a tussocky descent, through some bogs and then a calf-burning scramble up to the place shown in the above picture.   Then it’s left and a joint-shattering 1.5 mile downhill sprint on concrete to the field.  Finally you run a lap what feels like the biggest cricket field on mother Earth to cross the finish line.  Waugh’s Well that ends well.

27th June 2018 - Eddie’s Revenge (S)

Venue: St. Saviours Church, Buckstones Road, Shaw, OL2 8NB  Grid ref: SD999232
Start: 19.30pm
Distance: 6.1km / 3.8m  Climb: 323m / 1060ft
Entry: £5 EOD

12th July 2018 - Bull Hill (S)

ALSO A GRAND PRIX QUALIFIER
Venue: Red Lion Pub, Hawkshaw, Bury, BL8 4JS  Grid ref: 759166
Start: 19.30pm
Distance: 8.8km / 5.5m  Climb: 335m / 1099ft
Entry: £4 EOD

An ideal introduction to fell running for the fell curious!
Starting from Boardman's Farm, the route takes in a number of steep but runnable slopes, and passes the ancient Pilgrims' Cross before a fast descent to the finish. Likely to be muddy, and lots of fun!

21st July 2018 - Ingleborough Fell (M)

ALSO A GRAND PRIX QUALIFIER
Venue: Community Centre Sports Field, Ingleton, LA6 3HG
Start: 15.00pm
Distance: 11km / 6.8m  Climb: 600m / 1968ft
Entry: £4 EOD

The race starts on the sports field next to Ingleborough Community centre passes through the main street of the village, turns left on to the Hawes road, after four hundred metres turn right off the road on to the public footpath up Ingleborough. The race then follows this path to the summit and returns to the village by the same route. The field is re-entered from the Back gate car park.
As this route is along a public footpath any competitor may go around the course prior to the race.
The race is run as part of Ingleton's gala day with events for all the family.

19th August 2018 - Crowden Horseshoe (M)

ALSO A GRAND PRIX QUALIFIER
Venue: Crowden campsite, nr Woodhead, off A628
Start: 11.00am
Distance: 12.9km / 8m  Climb: 518m / 1699ft
Entry: Pre-Entry and EOD £5

The route can be split into three distinct parts up up and more up, bog bog and more bog, then down down and more down. However, this race has got to be one if the best in the local calendar. May be not for the faint hearted as the ascent is strength sapping.  The top of the moor has no path so you follow the flags but choose your own route and only have yourself to blame when you end up thigh deep in a peat bog, then comes a long technical decent. What’s not too like as there are cheap bacon butties to consume when you arrive back at the camp site (probably).

6th September 2018 - Hades Hill (S)

ALSO A GRAND PRIX QUALIFIER
Venue: Red Lion PH, The Square, Whitworth, OL12 8PY, SD885177
Start: 18.30pm
Distance: 8km / 5m  Climb: 360m / 1181ft
Entry: Pre-Entry and EOD £4

Simple out and back course with no technical difficulty, just lots of hard ascents over a short distance. And then back down!

Full body cover will be required for this race.

22nd September 2018 - Hyde Parkrun (S)

Venue: Hyde Park, Park Road, Tameside, Greater Manchester, SK14 2LN 9NJ
Start: 9am
Distance: 5km
Entry: FREE! BUT REMEMBER YOUR BARCODE!

13th October 2018 - Langdale Horseshoe (L)

ALSO A GRAND PRIX QUALIFIER
Venue: Old Dungeon Ghyll, Great Langdale, LA22 9JY
Start: 11.00am
Distance: 21.1km / 13.1m  Climb: 1450m / 4757ft
Pre-entry only £10 via Sportident website from 1st July

Part of the Lakeland Classics series, this race is over a rough, tough course with almost exclusively rocky and slippy ground. The weather in October is rarely ‘pleasant’ and the fells are often clagged in, making navigation difficult on a course with many pathless sections.   Previous experience of similar races will be asked for as part of the entry system (2 medium or long category A races in previous 3 years, or similar relevant experience)

The course climbs to Stickle Tarn before heading to Thunacar KnottEsk Hause shelter, BowfellCrinkle Crags and Pike of Blisco. On the descent from Crinkle Crags many runners negotiate the Bad Step, although it can be avoided depending on route choice.

3rd November 2018 - Blackstone Boundary (L)

Venue: Ogden Reservoir Visitors Car Park, New Hey
Start: 10am
Distance: 13m
Entry: Request a £5 donation to Francis House Hospice

EOD = Entry On Day

RULES = The rules are simple. FIVE races to qualify, to include at least ONE of each distance. You can run more of course.
